Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) are voices detected in electronic devices that cannot currently be explained with known physical principles. The voices typically consist of short utterances of just a few words, often in direct response to questions or comments about occurrences in the environment. Reports of these voices have involved virtually every known technology that is capable of supporting human voice. EVP are typically recorded using audio-recording devices or audio-recording computer software. In the basic form of EVP, they are not heard at the time they are recorded, but only on playback of the recording.

EVPs all fall in three classifications which are:

Class A - The voice captured is clear and can be understood by all that listen without any modification by audio editing software. This class is the most valued by investigators but is often the rarest to capture.

Class B - The voice or sound captured is somewhat weaker and may start out very soft or tail off in the end. It may require some editing or computer enhancement to understand. It is often difficult to have everyone who hears the clip to agree on what it is saying. This class is the most common of EVPs captured by investigators.

Class C - This class is obviously the weakest class and the words are very hard to understand or may be covered over by to much background noise. Although there is still no doubt that something paranormal is present, the words can not even be pulled out with the use of audio software.

Evp from Trinway Mansion in the ballroom. We were asking for a name and after stating dozens of names we got this response. We apologize for the background noise. It was one of our early evps and was taken with an older cassette recorder. 
 

  It states "I'm mad..stop that...get out."

From The Twin City Opera House in McConnelsville, Ohio. It had been some time since anything and it was getting late. We tried to provoke a response by saying some unkind things about the opera house. You will hear an investigator say "Didn't sell many tickets" and then a response after.

Also from The Twin City Opera House in McConnelsville, Ohio. We were all taking a break out in the main lobby by the front door. You can hear us in the background talking in the distance. Recorder was left by the orchestra pit with no one around. You can hear what sounds like a breathe right by the mic.

This EVP is also from The Twin City Opera House in McConnelsville, Ohio. We were in the main seating area of the opera house and it was very late. Only two of us were left when this took place. We were sitting on the far left of the room and this recorder was sitting on a chair in the front row on the right side. You will hear the investigator say out loud there was still two of us there and the last investigator got tired of waiting on you. You will then here a response that is hard to make out but is closer to the recorder than we are.

This EVP is from Charleston, South Carolina at Fort Sumter National Monument. I , Tom, being a big history buff, stayed on the island for several hours while other tour groups came and went. For about twenty minutes each time, I would have the fort to myself besides for one park ranger and 2 women from the bookstore. I decided to do some EVP work while I was there. This was captured in what I would call the northeast end of the fort in the casements. The noise in the background is the wind blowing the 5 flags from above. I ask "What rank are you?"

       "I'm a Captain"

This EVP is from The Stone Academy located in the Putnam Historical District in Zanesville, Ohio. The Stone Academy was originally built to serve as the state capital building, but also served as a school and public building until it became a private residence. The Stone Academy also had strong ties to the anti-slavery movement and served as a major stop on the underground railroad. This EVP happened at a moment when we were all sitting still just listening for sounds. You can also hear some rain dripping outside occasionally. Towards the middle you will hear a very quick voice and footstep followed by what can best be described as a rhythmic drum beat. We played this sound for one of the trustees of the building and they advised us there is nothing mechanical or non-mechanical that would have made that noise.

     


This EVP is also from The Stone Academy in the right front room known as the senate room. There were only two investigators in the room and it is a wide open room. I am telling anyone that might be there to touch the EMF detector sitting on the floor and so we know that someone is there. You will hear three knocks on something metallic but there was nothing around us that we could of hit to make this noise. All other investigators were at the base station.




     

 This Evp is from a private residence in Guernsey County, Ohio. The question was asked " Why are you here?",  and the following is the answer we got  when we listened to the recordings.

        "I can't leave"

This Evp is also from a private residence in Guernsey County, Ohio. I digital recorder was left in a bedroom that reportedly had a large amount of activity. The recorder was turned on and it was announced that if anyone would like to speak to us, they could do so by speaking into that device. This was recorded within a few minutes of leaving the room.

      " Go Away"

Another Evp from the private residence in Guernsey County, Ohio. This one is harder to understand, but it is still from unknown origins. The voice sounds similar to the one in "I can't leave" displayed above.

    Maybe "Sleep"

This EVP is from Penny Court a downtown business in Cambridge , Ohio. It was taken in the back of the basement. You will hear the investigator ask, "What do we have to do to get you come out". A response comes shortly after close to another investigator across the room. It is a little hard to make out the words but it may be saying, "Talk to me"

This EVP is also from Penny Court a downtown business in Cambridge , Ohio. We had heard an odd noise and you will hear the investigator make a joke about a Harley starting up in back. Shortly after you will hear a voice off in the distance that can not be understood.

This is another EVP  from Penny Court a downtown business in Cambridge , Ohio. This takes place in an upper room of the business. We were getting ready to leave the room and wanted to let anyone know this was there last chance to be heard. You will hear the investigator say, "We're leaving.....last chance.......". There is a voice that answers back immediately, "Yes"!

 This next clip is not technically an EVP, but is is an example of a direct response. It is at Penny Court in Cambridge , Ohio in the basement. One of the investigators is asking if anyone is here can you tap on something to let us know that you are here. A couple of seconds later you will hear a thump and all of us acknowledge that we heard the noise.

    

This EVP is from the Jennie Wade house in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was captured when a few of our investigators took a trip there in the off season. They were the only ones in the house the entire time they were at the Wade house. You will hear one of the investigators say "Hey Jennie" and you will hear someone immediately respond back.



   

This is another EVP is from the Jennie Wade house in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. you can hear the investigators walking across the wood floor when a voice seems to say "hello".



   

The EVP was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio. There was a recorder left in one of the bedroom where a large portion of the claims took place. All investigators were on a break at this time when a voice seems to call out the name John. The are no investigators on our team named John.

The investigator asks "can you make a sound" and a few seconds later you hear "someone" repeat the word sound in almost a mocking manner and then ther is a quick voice right after her second statement.

The investigator asks "Are you trapped hear" and it is followed by two abnormal sounds that may be someone trying to communicate.



    

This clip was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio. Two investigators are asking questions in the attic when a series of bangs on the attic door takes place. After checking with the other investigators and verifying it on our DVR system, there was no one even close to the attic door at the time of these sounds.



     

This clip was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio by a digital audio recorder in the attic that was left running for the duration of the investigation. It is an older residence and the current home owners were told a story by a neighbor about a shooting that took place in the attic some years back. We were unable to back this up through historical research but did pick up what appears to be a gunshot in the attic.



     

Again this clip was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio by a digital audio recorder in the attic that was left running for the duration of the investigation. This EVP is a little harder to hear but at the beginning and towards the end it sounds like a woman humming a song.



    

The EVP was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio in the basement. You hear the investigator ask if the house was built in 1911 a immediately after you get a response back. The response is short and is better heard with headphones.



    

This EVP was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio in the second floor hallway be a stationary recorder. The investigators are discussing the possible movement of one of the doors. You will hear the female investigator walk towards the male investigator inside one of the rooms. While she walks by there is a strong male gasp for air that definately does not belong to the female investigator.



    

This EVP was taken from a private home investigation located in Springfield, Ohio in the 2 year old daughter's bedroom while she slept. A lot of the claims of activity the family had centered around the little girl so we placed an audio recorder in the room with the little girl and just outside the door to her room. We did not place a camera in the little girls room while she was sleeping at first out of respect for privacy of the family. On several occasions an  stuffed Elmo toy would sound make sound on its own. You usually had to squeeze its stomach for it to talk and the parents said that it had never gone off on its own again. On three sperate occasions the daughter would cry out and the Elmo would sound off during the same time. Each time we would hear the noises, we would check the daughter and she would be sleeping in her bed in the same position every time. After the third time we took the Elmo out of the room and took it downstairs and it was silent the rest of the night. The three different clips are below.







     

This EVP was taken at the Zanesville Community Theater in the backstage area by the dressing rooms. There were only two male investigators there at the time this was captured. This is a good example of a class A EVP.

This EVP was taken in the basement of Zanesville Community Theater. There is some background noise but you will still be able to hear it clearly. The two investigators are trying to get something to interact by having it turn on a flashlight sitting on a chair in the middle of the hall. They were recording with a Sony HandyCam and a digital voice recorder. At the end you will the investigator will say the light wont hurt you and something answers back "Yes it will".



      

This EVP was taken in the main seating area of Zanesville Community Theater. It sounds like cards being shuffled. In between the cards being shuffled, you also hear a voice that appears to say "My turn".



       

This EVP was taken in the basement of Zanesville Community Theater. It seems to either be someone saying "Yoo Hoo" or the sound of a coocoo clock going off.



      

This EVP was taken in the main seating area of Zanesville Community Theater. You will hear the investigator ask "Is there anybody that would like to put on a show for us tonight" and you will hear a voice answer "Where?"



      

This EVP was taken in the main seating area of Zanesville Community Theater. You will hear the investigator ask "is there someone hear on the steps with me" due to EMF readings he was getting. You will hear an odd sounding voice answer back "No" right away.



      

This EVP was again taken at the Zanesville Community Theater in the backstage area by the dressing rooms. You will hear the investigator say that "this is your chance to communicate with someone" and then you will hear a response that is somewhat weaker and hard to make out.



      

This EVP was taken in the main seating area of Zanesville Community Theater. The investigator was asking if "anyone" was present to please spin the wheels that were on a stage prop. There is a response at the end but is hard to make out what is being said.  



     

This EVP comes from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (Weston State Hospital) on a public investigation that several members of our team attended. The investigator asking questions was attempting to get "anyone" present in the room with us to move the door if we hit on the right emotion they were feeling. He will stay for example if you are feeling happy to move the door. Shortly after he finishes talking about happy, you will hear a voice say what sounds like the word "happy" and another investigator in the room actually state she may heard the response



     

This EVP comes from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (Weston State Hospital) on a public investigation that several members of our team attended. You will hear the the investigator ask "Can you speak to us if your here?" and the you will hear a very loud response and then the investigator asks a second question. However, we have yet be able to determine what is being said in the response. 



     

This EVP comes from an investigation of a private residence in Caldwell, Ohio. It comes from a stationary recorder that was placed in the large attic of the house. It appears to be the faint cry or whimper of possibly a child or a female.



     
This EVP comes from an investigation at Papa Chucks Restaurant / Historic Guthrie Home. You will the investigator ask "Does it worry you that we are here?" Then shortly after you will hear a one word response that is hard to make out.

This EVP comes from an investigation at Papa Chucks Restaurant / Historic Guthrie Home. When this clip was captured there were many anomalous things going on. We had three investigators in an entryway that had been sitting watching both rooms to the sides. They we getting many unexplainable KII hits, cold spots that seemed to have definite outlines, and seeing shadows move across a room where there are no windows. Other investigators were called in to witness the activity and that is when this clip was captured from a stationary recorder in the room where the shadows were seen. It speaks twice, the first more faint than the second. The second time it speaks you will hear an investigator ask any of the other investigators if "Somebody else want to come in here?" right after that you get the second voice that sounds like it says "I am!" The investigators hear and respond to the voice.



     
This EVP comes from an investigation at Papa Chucks Restaurant / Historic Guthrie Home. It comes from a stationary recorder in the main dining room. It captured a voice when there was no one present in the room but it is to hard to make out what is being said.



      

This EVP comes from the basement of the historic Dr. Increase Mathews House in Zanesville. This come from a stationary recorder that was left in the basement area on top of a fireplace mantle. It appears the sound of a human breath but there is no investigators in the area at the time.

You will hear the investigator ask "Would you like to come play with us?" and you will hear what appears to be a faint response as a loud truck passes outside.



     

This EVP comes from a private residence investigation in South Zanesville, Ohio. The family had several claims of seeing shadow people, seeing apparitions, and hearing voices. There was one spirit in particular that seemed to hang around one of the daughters and sometimes scare her by slamming her bedroom door or making other noises. At the time this was taken, the investigators tried a little provoking the get this particular male enity to show its self to us since it had not done anything to that point. We tend to shy away from provoking as a rule but do use it from time to time. You will hear a response to the provoking at the end that sounds like "Done dead"



       

This EVP comes from a private residence investigation in South Zanesville, Ohio. This is from a first floor back bedroom where several claims of apparitions being seen had been reported. This voice was recorded on a stationary digital recorder when no one was present on the first floor. It seems to possible say the name "Chuck" although to our knowledge the name has no connection to the home.

You will hear an investigator ask "If you want to talk to me say my name" and you will hear an immediate "No" and the investigator says "I'm right here" and the you will hear the same voice say "Don't start!" almost angrily.



     

This EVP comes from a private residence investigation in South Zanesville, Ohio. You will hear two female investigators talking about feeling a cold spot and then shortly after you will hear what can be best described as a moan.

You can hear the murmur of an investigators voice coming from the floor below, but then you will hear a voice coming from near the recorder that sounds like the name "Ben". We only sent in one team at a time so no one was on that floor at the time.



     

These clips come from a private residence investigation in South Zanesville, Ohio. The best I can describe is a "ghost cat". You will hear three different clips that have the sound of a cat "meow". The only problem is that the family does not have a cat and the home is way too sound for a cat to sneak in.

This EVP is from our last private investigation of Prospect Place in Trinway, Ohio on November 21, 2009. This is from a stationary digital recorder that was in the ballroom. There is a female investigator asking if anyone present is from a certain time frame and she gets a "Yes" when she asks for the time of 1880s.



     

This EVP is from our last private investigation of Prospect Place in Trinway, Ohio on November 21, 2009. This EVP is interesting from the standpoint of proving the power of an individuals psychic  ability. There we several investigators in the second floor hallway including one member who is a sensitive. You will hear on investigator talking about how her Sony Handycam is having difficulty focusing on the member that is sensitive. Right after you will here a voice start to talk that shouldn't be there and as that voice is still talking you will hear our sensitive say "I keep hearing you don't belong here". What makes it interesting is that the EVP actually says "Just leave us here" which is almost a direct match to what the sensitive was feeling. The digital recorder was at the opposite end of  the hallway.



     

This EVP is from our last private investigation of Prospect Place in Trinway, Ohio on November 21, 2009. This EVP was captured in the sisters bedroom on the second floor of the mansion. You will the investigator ask "Can you say hello" and you will here a response of "Yes ma'm"!

A couple of members of our team were poking fun at one of our female investigators that was sleeping back at base station and comments on how sleeping beauty is missing everything. Right after he says that you will hear a voice say "She is not"!

Several of us were gathering in a spot where ther are several reported stories of an apparition being seen at dead time (3:00 am). You will hear an investigator say the words dead time towards the middle and then another voice repeat what she says. However no one in our group is saying it a second time!



     

This EVP is from our last private investigation of Prospect Place in Trinway, Ohio on November 21, 2009. This was recorded in the second floor bedroom across from the sisters bedroom. We had a lot of KII hits in this room earlier in the night and had heard voices coming from this room. However, at the time this was recorded, our group was taking a break at base station and outside.

There is a female investigator asking Mr Adams who his favorite president was and then you will hear a response.

It was captured on the second floor hallway while a few of our investigators were walking through the area. It is unclear what the investigators were talking about, but you will hear the voice come over top them in the middle of the track and say "Not me". You can tell the voice is closer to the mic then the members were.

It was captured on the second floor hallway while the team was sitting in the first bedroom to the left except one male investigator was sitting right outside the door on the steps going to the third floor. The male investigator acknowledges hearing a voice and tells one of the members in the room. The voice will come first on the recording.

Shortly after that you will have the evp at almost the same time as the other investigator says "flash" to warn the first investigator that he is about to take a picture.



     

This EVP comes from our investigation at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. There are two female investigators in the second floor master bedroom talking about an unexplainable light they just observed and there is a voice that comes through about mid-way in the clip.

You will her the investigator ask for the spirit to please come in front of the green light to get it to light up again. As soon as they ask this you will here a low voice then you will here the investigators thanking the spirit for lighting up the KII meter again.



     

This EVP comes from our investigation at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. This clip is from the second floor master bedroom while were having somethin communicate with us by way of a KII meter. You will hear an investigator trying to get the spirit to touch the back of a flashlight we had next to a KII meter and she explains the the object will not hurt them. You then here a response back of " It's cold".

The team is investigating in the tea room on the other side of the entry way. You will hear an investigator ask for any one present to come over towards her and a voice answers back "No"

This clip comes from our investigation at Bryn Du Mansion in Granville, Ohio.  This clip comes from a room known as the "trunk room" on the second floor. You will hear the investigator state that "there is a box in the middle of the room and you could kick it". then you hear a noise that sounds as if the box actually moves. The box was not near any of the investigators and had the recorder on top of it. We realize that this is not an EVP but still very interesting.



     

The next two EVP's have to do with a murder in Zanesville in the early 1990's know as the "Gypsy Murder".  There is a location in Zanesville that has a connection to the case and we had a short EVP session to try and make contact with the victim. The victim is thought to still linger in the neighborhood due to eyewitness accounts of paranormal phenomenon. This session consisted of four investigators one of which is a sensitive and another of which is a medium. The other two members were responsible for recording the session with audio and video. This session was not just held to make contact but to also use scientific tools to try to provide some proof to the power of psychic abilities.
